About Sugarmill Woods
Sugarmill Woods is a large, deed-restricted community off US 19 and US 98 in Homosassa, planned in the early 1970s with an unusual focus on keeping land natural; roughly a third of the original plan was set aside as greenbelts. It is organized into villages, mainly Cypress Village, Oak Village and Southern Woods, and about 4,400 homes have been built so far, with lots still available for new construction. There is no single community-wide clubhouse or pool. Instead, the Oak Village sports complex provides tennis, pickleball, a junior Olympic pool, a fitness center, racquetball courts, shuffleboard and a play area. The property owners association is mandatory for every parcel owner, and annual assessments have historically been low compared with gated golf communities. Most homesites in Southern Woods sit on golf course lots, and the Cottages at Southern Woods offer smaller homes along the opening fairways with landscape maintenance. The community has its own fire station and an active neighborhood watch.
The golf at Sugarmill Woods
Sugarmill Woods has two golf clubs and 36 holes. Sugarmill Woods Country Club, designed by Ron Garl, plays as an 18-hole, par 72 round on its Cypress and Pine nines, which have distinctly different characters. Citrus National Golf Club, previously known as Southern Woods Golf Club, was designed by Hale Irwin in the early 1990s and plays close to 6,900 yards. Tampa-based Links Golf, led by PGA professional Scott Yates, bought both clubs and the Oak Village Bath and Tennis Club in late 2022 and has been restoring course conditions. Club memberships are separate from homeowner assessments and come in full golf, weekday sport golf, seasonal, Oak Village and dining categories, with food and beverage minimums. Outside golfers can reserve tee times online.
Is club membership required in Sugarmill Woods?
Optional. Property owners association membership is mandatory, but club memberships are separate and optional. Options include full golf, weekday sport golf, seasonal, non-golf Oak Village and dining memberships.
