About Avila
Avila covers roughly 700 acres off North Florida Avenue and Bearss Avenue in north Tampa. It holds about 395 residences, mostly custom and semi-custom estates plus some villa-style homes, behind eight-foot perimeter walls and a manned gatehouse that operates 24 hours a day. Development began in 1978, and the community has built out over decades, so original 1980s homes now sit near newer construction and full rebuilds. Streets use Spanish place names such as Guisando de Avila and Sedona de Avila, and many lots are large with mature trees and course or lake frontage. Inside the walls, roads are private. Because the community is small and the lots are big, turnover is limited and each house tends to be one of a kind, which makes pricing house by house rather than by model. Membership in the country club is optional, so a buyer can live in Avila without joining. HOA rules, assessments and architectural review are strict, so ask for the governing documents early.
The golf at Avila
Avila Golf and Country Club has operated since 1980 and is fully private. Golf Digest credits the course to Ron Garl, with Jack Nicklaus listed for renovation work, and the club markets it as a Nicklaus-designed championship layout. The course winds through the estate lots, so many holes play between homes and water. Members get a practice range, short-game areas, a golf simulator and instruction programs. Beyond golf, the club has Har-Tru clay tennis courts with leagues and tournaments, a 7,000-square-foot fitness facility with group classes and personal training, an aquatics program, and a Mediterranean-style clubhouse with fine dining, casual outdoor dining and wine events. The club also hosts weddings and meetings. Because the club is private, there are no public tee times; golfers play as members or as a member's guest.
Is club membership required in Avila?
Optional. Club membership at Avila Golf and Country Club is optional and separate from owning a home in Avila. The club is private, so golf access comes through membership.
