About Palma Ceia

Palma Ceia is one of South Tampa's best-known neighborhoods, centered on the corner of MacDill Avenue and Bay to Bay Boulevard. The golf club occupies about 82 pine-covered acres in the middle of it, and the streets around the course hold a mix of 1920s bungalows and Mediterranean Revival homes, mid-century ranches and newer custom construction. Teardowns and rebuilds are common, so a single block can show a century of architecture. There is no master HOA and no gate here; this is a city neighborhood with sidewalks, older trees and a regular street grid. Lots near the course are prized for the green views across the fence, though most homes do not have direct course frontage the way a planned golf community would. Because Palma Ceia is a city of Tampa neighborhood, flood zones and elevation vary block by block and matter a great deal for insurance, so review each property's flood zone and elevation certificate early. The club sits at 1601 South MacDill Avenue.

The golf at Palma Ceia

Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club opened in 1916 with a course routed by Tom Bendelow through pines and sandy soil. In 1923 the board hired Donald Ross to renovate it, and his associate Walter Hatch oversaw the work, adjusting the routing and adding bunkers. In 2009 the club brought in Bobby Weed to restore the Ross features, rebuild drainage and add back lost bunkers, and that project earned a renovation of the year award from Golf Inc. in 2012. The club has a deep tournament history: it hosted the Gasparilla Open, a PGA Tour stop, from 1932 to 1935, and has run the Gasparilla Invitational amateur event since 1956. Walter Hagen was the winter professional in 1919, and early women's tour events were held here in the late 1940s and 1950s. The club is private, with initiation fees and dues, and play is for members and their guests.

Is club membership required in Palma Ceia?

Varies, ask for current details. Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club is a private club with initiation fees and dues. It is a separate club inside a city neighborhood, so homes do not come with access; confirm membership terms with the club.
